Moderation,
Like soda, like caffeine, like anything,
Became a lifestyle - because restriction is not healthy.
Moderation,
Once meant, “I’ll only have one.”
Until it became,
“Only a few on special occasions.”
Moderation,
In one form, translated to, “no more than 4”
Until it became,
“I’ll have a glass of water between each drink.”
Moderation,
Calculation, equals: big meal before the bar
Until it became,
“No drinking when alone, or when sad”
Moderation,
Will work
Until inevitably - it will not
Because we’re playing - not with fire, but with poison
Moderation,
So elusive,
So impossible to quite crack.
“But they can do it, why can’t I?” the lie sings
“Drink responsibly”
No one says, about soda, or caffeine,
“Drink responsibly”
Means if you can’t - you are broken
I wonder,
Who benefits from this brand we are sold?
Who taught us we need it - and if we don’t, we’re no fun?
What do kids say on this matter,
This new business of moderation?
What do our younger selves believe of this tale?
What I know, is
Moderation
Is not needed - with real joy, real life
So I drink it, every day, irresponsibly.
If you’ve been looking for support in the form of, “I just want to talk to a human” - me, too. I’m working on creating an offer to fill this gap. Not AA, not addiction counseling, just a person who is doing the thing. If interested - here is a form to fill out to help shape this work. Thank you, as always, for being here.
Real courage. Real joy. A very real life. ❤️
